This project is a complete renovation of a penthouse apartment in Greenwich Village, New York City. The apartment is a compact 84 m2 (900 sf), urban work-live environment that makes extensive use of custom cabinetry and furnishings to maximize available living space and minimize clutter. The custom millwork integrates lighting, audio and other features. The apartment’s compact arrangement and its owner's lifestyle demanded the potential for flexibility and modulation. Atmospheric ighting is used to introduce the possibility of environmental variation and control, allowing the occupant to manipulate the environment according to natural light conditions, uses, and moods. Within this logic, distinct attitudes towards materiality work as part of the same mixture. The immediacy and sensuality of natural, 'slow' materials mingle with an ephemeral immateriality of light, color, reflection and transparency.
